Winnipeg Artist Part of Dynamic Duo on Amazing Race Canada

In June 2013, Catherine Wreford Ledlow received heartbreaking news. She had terminal brain cancer and doctors told her she had two to six years to live.

But the Winnipeg dancer, actress and singer has overcome those hurdles — she’s nine years away from being diagnosed and counting — and has made it her mission to live life to the fullest. And now, in what could be seen as the ultimate act of carpe diem, she will take part in the next season of The Incredible Race Canada alongside his best friend of 25 years, Broadway actor and performer Craig Ramsay.

The two are thrilled to no longer have to keep their involvement with the reality show a secret, and while they’ve yet to keep quiet about the details of the competition itself — no spoilers here — they’re still talking to each other, which is a good sign.

Wreford Ledlow, 42, and Ramsay, 45, have been through a lot together during their quarter-century friendship, which began in the studios of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, where they immediately bonded over their love of musical theatre. (Wreford Ledlow appeared in 42nd street on Broadway, while Ramsay starred in fiddler on the roof and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang among other credits.)

It was Ramsay who urged Wreford Ledlow to call his doctor nine years ago, and it was also his idea that the couple apply for The Incredible Race Canada like a team.

In 2019, the duo were invited to return to where it all began to play Lord and Lady Capulet in a Royal Winnipeg Ballet production of Romeo and Juliet.

“We kind of reconnected after that,” Wreford Ledlow said. “We had never played together before, and once we did, we were like, ‘We have to do this again. “”

They shot their application video over two years ago. “We just wanted to show our friendship, our genuine friendship, which is hilarious,” Ramsay said. “We’re having such a great time together and such a great, unique dynamic that we definitely shared it in our initial video, which obviously caught the producers’ attention.”

They were officially cast in Season 8 of The Incredible Race Canada in early 2020 – then the pandemic had other plans. While the delay was undoubtedly disappointing for the other teams, it was terrifying for Catherine and Craig.

“I didn’t know if I would live that long to be a part of it,” Wreford Ledlow said. “But I had an MRI just before I left and one when I got back and everything was stable so that was great.”

During the race itself, which was finally filmed this spring, Wreford Ledlow said she felt great. “There was no worrying moment about it,” she says.

There is a pause on the line. “Oh, that’s not true,” Ramsay said.

“It’s not the elephant in the room: Catherine has terminal brain cancer and there are so many obstacles that come with it. But in Catherine’s nine years with it, she’s a warrior and she overcomes anything thrown at her.

“It was the ultimate test and there are concerns – for Catherine, and for me, as someone who loves her very much. She’s such a positive person that everything is always great, and I love that about her. But us being (race) partners, and why I feel like I’m the right partner, is because our friendship is so strong that I can point out things that I know Catherine needs to address and overcome.” (It also helps that they are performers accustomed to receiving notes.)

While a show where people face stressful and physically demanding challenges can certainly test a friendship, Wreford Ledlow says being on the show has actually brought them closer — all the more so. that their friendship is usually long distance, with her in Winnipeg and him in Palm Springs, California.

“We were close before, but this race took us to a whole different level of connection,” she says. “We didn’t have phones, we didn’t have anything. We mentally connected – even without me saying anything, he knew what I was thinking and I knew what he was thinking. Our minds went together. kind of bonded through this whole run.”

“We didn’t want to destroy our friendship, and the race did that to people,” Ramsay said. “So there’s also that concern.”

“I never worried about that, Craig,” Wreford Ledlow replies with a laugh.
