Iconic Soho jazz venue Ronnie Scott’s is calling on Londoners to donate all abandoned, forgotten and unused musical instruments to the club’s Musical Instrument Amnesty.

The amnesty will take place on Saturday 22nd January at the site and the donated instruments will go to school-aged children, in the UK or overseas, who have limited access to music education.

This year, Ronnie ScottThe Charitable Foundation of has partnered with charities Music For All and Sistema England to ensure donated instruments find the best new homes and contribute to music education in communities around the world.

Instruments don’t have to be the latest, high-end, or in pristine condition.

As long as the instrument is functional – even if it’s missing a few strings or needs a little love one way or another – and easily transportable (no pianos or organs), all instruments are welcome, from plastic recorders to violins and state instruments. state-of-the-art mixer.

Instruments are given a tracking number so donors can follow the journey of their maracas or tambourines to see for themselves where in the world they will find their second life.

A video taken by an Afghan journalist shows the Taliban burning musical instruments in front of a musician in Afghanistan’s Paktia region, with the musician crying after his instrument was set on fire.

In a viral video shared by renowned Afghanistan journalist Abdulhaq Omeri, a guy with a gun is shown mocking him, while another films his “miserable position”.

“As Local Musician Cries, Taliban Destroy Musician’s Musical Instrument.” In a tweet, Omeri wrote, “This incident happened in #ZazaiArub District #Paktia Province #Afghanistan.

Previously, the Taliban banned the playing of music in automobiles.

Amid the crackdown, the Taliban also ordered the beheading of “mannequins” in clothing stores in Afghanistan’s Herat province, according to the Sputnik news agency, citing Afghan media.

Apart from that, the group had banned live music at weddings and ordered men and women to celebrate in different rooms, the owner of a hotel in Afghanistan told Sputnik in October.

The Taliban are cracking down on ‘mannequins’ used in clothing stores, claiming it is a violation of Sharia law.

Signs of such incidents have begun to reappear on the streets of Kabul.

The Taliban Ministry for Promoting Virtue and Preventing Vice has also issued “religious guidelines” calling on Afghan television stations to stop showing women in dramas and soap operas. Although the group has said these new guidelines may not be implemented, history has shown that the group is committed to implementing its version of harsh sharia law in the country, Dawn News reported.

As the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan after 20 years, experts also believe Afghan women are most likely to face an uncertain future under the terror groups’ rule.

The Flute musical instrument brings with it the rich history as well as all the melodies and good positive vibes to train with.

Form factor and acoustics

The flute belongs to the family of instruments in the woodwind group. A flute is one of the earliest identified musical instruments that consists of hand-drilled holes. The flute is a type of aerophone instrument that generates sound when air flows through an opening. The sound in a flute is produced by a current of air directed against a cutting edge, on which the air generates vibrations which alternate regularly above and below the edge. Flutes are normally tubular structures, but they can also be globular as is the case with the ocarina and early gourd flutes. If a tube flute is stopped at the lower end, its pitch is one octave lower than that of a comparable open flute. A person playing the flute is known as a flautist or even flautist.

flute

Types of flutes

There are different types of flutes and it comes in several categories. Fipple flutes belong to this category which consists of a duct that directs the air over the rim. These types of flutes make it easier to play because they give a distinct timbre that is different from non-fippled flutes, but also has the disadvantage of taking away some control from the player. Some of their types are mentioned below:

  • Gem Horn Flute
  • Flageolet Flute
  • Flute Whistle
  • Recorder
  • Tonette Flute
  • Tin whistle flute
  • Ocarina Flute
  • Fujara flute

Let’s come to the second type of flutes, called side-blown flutes or even transverse flutes. The transverse flute musician uses the hole present on the side of the tube in order to generate sound instead of blowing on the end of the tube. These are western concert flutes such as:

  • transverse flute
  • fife flute
  • Dizi Flute
  • bansuri flute

These also consist of blown flutes such as:

  • Ney Flute
  • Xiao flute
  • Danso Flute
  • Kaval flute
  • Shakuhachi Flute
  • quena flute
  • Anasazi Flute

The flutes can be open at one or both ends. Flutes like the xun, ocarina, police whistle, panpipes and boatswain’s whistle are closed. On the other hand, the concert and the recorder are open. The organ pipe can be closed or open, depending on the desired sound.

Types of flutes

Regional specialties

Flutes in China, Africa, South America, and elsewhere contain a notch that can be cut into the edge to aid sound generation. Vertical flutes are found in the region of Oceania. In flutes held horizontally and blown sideways, a blowing stream hits the opposite edge of a side mouth hole. There are also vertical flutes in which an internal duct directs the air against a hole made inside the instrument.

Story

Flutes date back to one of Europe’s oldest musical instruments, as flutes found in the Swabian Jura region of present-day Germany date back 43,000 years. They signify the existence of the human presence as well as the musical tradition in which the flutes played a big role. Some of the oldest flutes found in Asia and Europe also have a long history to the present day. A playable flute has also been found in China, dating to 9,000 years ago. South America also had its own ancient flute culture where the instrument found in Caral, Peru dated back 5000 years and 7500 years in Labrador. Historians then discovered that bamboo flutes had a long history in India and China. The oldest documented cross flute or transverse flute named “the chi” in China was found to be made of bamboo. On the other hand, the Indian bamboo cross flute called ‘Bansuri’ was sacred to Lord Krishna as he is depicted in Hindu art along with the musical instrument. Cross flutes in India appeared as early as the first century AD in Sanchi and 2n/a at 4and century CE at Amravati. The interesting fact in Europe is that transverse flutes spread across Germany, becoming known as the German flute.

Breathing Techniques

There are different types of breathing patterns or techniques by which a flute player can generate music. They are:

  • Diaphragmatic breathing – This type of breathing optimizes inhalation, which reduces the number of breaths while playing the instrument.
  • Circular Breathing – This type of breathing brings air in through the nose and pushes it out through the mouth, allowing continuous sound to be generated while playing the instrument.

The flute is a musical instrument that has a very rich history in many parts of the world and has been associated with music for a very long time. Several artists have also made their respective careers in the music industry with the flute. It will be one of the greatest instruments in the music industry, even for the generation to come, as its legacy will only grow.

CHICO – New Chico High School Music Boosters are hosting a musical instrument drive to benefit music education.

“Our January 8th instrument drive is an opportunity for music education supporters to pass on the instruments they have on hand, just in time for the end-of-year cleanup,” said Sean Maiorano. , president of the Boosters. “We plan to make this an annual event.”

Once-loved or additional musical instruments may find new purpose as donations to benefit symphony, concert and marching orchestras as well as choir programs at Chico High, according to a news release.

Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on January 8, people can drop off instruments for volunteers in the stadium parking lot at Chico High.

The Boosters are looking for any new or used instrument with the exception of pianos. “A lot of people might have old instruments in their cupboards that might be suitable for transmitting,” Maiorano said.

The Boosters hope the campaign will be successful. After the drive, the instruments will be carefully cleaned. Students have been wearing masks and cleaning instruments after use since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are excited to see what the community has and how to support the music program at Chico High. We want children of all ages to participate in the music. It’s enriching and students who participate in music do better in school and it’s also a good social experience for them,” said Maiorano.

Music Boosters are similar to sports boosters.

“I think it’s important to support the arts and increase the resources the school already has,” Maiorano said.

Donors can contact the organizers to make special arrangements for picking up or delivering instruments. Both new and “lightly used” instruments in need of repair are welcome. Large instruments such as pianos cannot be accepted at this time due to their size and cost, according to a press release.

Chico High teacher Ruben Morales, who leads band, guitar and piano lessons, said the instruments would be loaned to students who cannot afford to buy or rent them.

“We are very grateful to the community for any donations that may come in. There is always a need for quality instruments at all levels of our public school music programs. Any student playing an instrument that is difficult to use will have a less enjoyable time than a student who plays an instrument that works very well and may end up thinking he is the problem when it is the instrument itself. Every student deserves to have a quality music education, and having a quality instrument is a great way to ensure that happens,” Morales said. “In particular, we are always looking for more saxophones and trombones, but all instruments in the band are welcome. At the moment we don’t have an orchestra, but that might change in the near future. All instruments are going to need repairs, so if you cannot donate an instrument but still want to help, please consider donating to Chico High Music Boosters.

All booster donations go directly to enriching music education at school.

Maiorano said the instrumental player is just one of the ways the new nonprofit aims to support Chico High’s choir and instrumental programs. “Music Boosters raise funds to purchase instruments, music and provide resources that support the growth of music programs,” he said. “We also work on grant writing and support teachers in organizing enrichment activities such as field trips, college visits, choir retreats, guest speakers and others. events and opportunities.”

The boosters held a silent dessert auction during the band’s Dec. 8 concert and previously teamed up with Nothing Bundt Cakes for a fundraiser. The volunteers also sold stickers, temporary tattoos and other “musical swags” at soccer games and other school events, according to the press release.

Anyone wishing to support music education at Chico High can also donate directly to the Music Boosters fund through the North Valley Community Foundation at https://www.nvcf.org/funds/Chico-High-Music-Boosters.

“We were very pleased with the response on campus and the community as a whole,” Maiorano said. “Access to a quality and nurturing music education environment is the top priority for boosters.”

According to the website of the North Valley Community Fund, which sponsors the Boosters, the purpose of the fund is to raise money to purchase instruments, music, and provide resources that support the growth of music programs at Chico High School. The sums collected by this fund will be distributed by the foundation on behalf of the fund according to the recommendations of the fund’s advisors. The parent-led non-profit organization Music Boosters was established in the fall of 2021.

Do you have an unused musical instrument? Here’s how to donate it via Ronnie Scott

Do you have a worn horn or an outdated saxophone? Is your dusty guitar a waste of bass? Donate your unused musical instruments to this amnesty.

Legendary jazz club Ronnie Scott’s wants your instruments. Not for themselves, but to pass on to budding young musicians who might find it hard to buy theirs – literally scot

All you have to do is bring your favorite instrument(s) to Ronnie Scott on January 22 (between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.). They look for just about any instrument, from electronic keyboards to guitars, and even gongs. They’re also looking for useful kit items like microphones, stands, and effects pedals.

Instruments in good condition or requiring only minor repairs are preferred, but you can also bring equipment that requires more difficult restoration (Paul Simonon, take note).

The club will use charities such as Sistema England to redistribute the instruments to children who would get the most out of them. Nina Kaye from the charity said: “There are children all over the country who want to learn to play an instrument but cannot afford to buy one – and there are thousands of instruments that take dust in cupboards and on shelves that need to be played. It’s initiatives like this that will bring music to many more young people and put instruments to their proper use.
