Musical instrument maker exhibits at WAW
Selected pieces from Jonathan Waldo’s 42-year career in making musical instruments, furniture and art will be on display in the Hasenfus Gallery, 64 Main Street, during the Wiscasset Art Walk on Thursday, August 26, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. demonstration of certain instruments during the evening.
âMy instrument making starts with creating the design,â Waldo explains, âthen I build the instrument from scratch. With the exception of the mechanics, I create all the components of the instrument. Waldo says he feels joy when he makes an instrument because it is in the service of the musician, the music and the materials. âEvery step in the process of making custom musical instruments is essential to creating a world-class instrument. I only make one or two instruments at a time so that I can devote my full attention to each step of the process. My intention is that each instrument is an extension of the musician and a beauty in itself.
Waldo, who grew up in Washington, DC, lives and works in Midcoast Maine. He has been a featured musician at many Wiscasset Art Walks where his artistry in playing classical guitar and Arabic oud complemented local gallery exhibits and thrilled viewers. Waldo has also taught in the Art Van program in Bath, Maine, at several colleges in Midcoast Maine, and at various workshops. In addition to running his own musical instrument and furniture workshop, he works with the Von Huene workshop in Brookline, Massachusetts. In addition to the upcoming Wiscasset Art Walk exhibition, Waldo has exhibited at the Corcoran School of Art, the Boston Early Music Festival exhibitions, and the Amherst Early Music Festival Exhibition.
