On Sunday evening, the Union’s board of directors announced by Instagram comedian Mo Amer is said to be headlining the Big Show 2022 performance. Opening the performance is comedian Zainab Johnson.

Amer is best known for his Netflix comedy specials: “Mo Amer: The Vagabond,” which premiered in 2018, and “Mo Amer: Mohammed in Texas,” which premiered in 2021. Additionally, Amer plays the cousin of the titular character in the ongoing Hulu sit-com, “Ramy”.

He is also ready to play a undisclosed character in “Black Adam,” a DC Comics superhero movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, which premieres in October. Johnson also filmed an intro for Amer’s “Mohammed in Texas” special.

Amer will headline the first performance of The Big Show since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Union Board’s decision to bring in a comedian for the performance was partly due to tradition and partly to facilitate the production of the event, according to Campus Life director Jennifer Yawson.

“We usually do music, comedy, music, comedy, and our last one was music,” Yawson said. “But it’s also a bit easier to produce than a music show and for our first outing it made sense to do that kind of show.”

Bidding for comedian shows began around spring break this semester. With Amer as their performer, Yawson and Union Board hope they’ve found someone who both matches the style of comedy the campus appreciates and who is also gaining recognition.

“We’ve been very lucky in the past to win people over before they break up and it’s exciting to have them here on campus and to continue to see them grow as artists,” Yawson said. “We hope students will have the same experience with Mo.”

The 2022 Big Show will take place on April 18 at 9 p.m. in the Goodrich Chapel. Doors will open at 8:30 p.m.

Big Show tickets are available today and are free for students. Students can pick up their ticket at the Campus Life Office on the third floor of the Kellogg Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Any remaining tickets after April 13 will be available for students wishing to bring a guest as well as faculty and staff.
