Kim Petras: “The dream comes true” to be the first transgender performer at the EMAs

Kim Petras said it was “a dream come true” to be the first transgender performer at the MTV Music Awards.

The German-born pop star will perform a track from her upcoming album at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) in Budapest, Hungary on Sunday, November 14.

MTV recently supported the venue for the awards despite the country’s recent passage of legislation widely condemned as anti-LGBT.

Petras said: “I’m super excited. I’ve watched EMAs since I was a kid. I grew up in Germany and it was a big deal for me when they happened.

“And being the first transgender artist out there is very surreal for me and very amazing because I never remember seeing a transgender pop star at EMAs when I was a kid and so it’s a dream come true, that ‘ is a complete moment. “

The 29-year-old described the song she will perform as “super pop, great out there and fun” – which she says is all in its “essence.”

She added: “And I just hope it can bring joy to the people watching it and it can make people feel like they are not alone because with the censorship of LGBTQ media in Hungary , I think it’s so powerful that I get to play it and can show who I am and I’m not censored, and MTV fought for that and I’m proud, I’m really excited.

Petras also explained how she has seen progress for LGBT rights over the past few years, saying, “I love the LGBTQ community, have been a part of it since I was a child, and I think a lot of changes happened over the last few years in America, Germany, about the fact that gender just wasn’t a big deal.

“And I just want to be one of the people who don’t judge people so much, people can live as they want to live, and it’s not banned or censored.

“I just think it’s an upside down way of thinking and I want to be a part of liberating people to be themselves and be brave enough to be themselves because I am someone who felt like I had to hide when I was a kid. “

The singer-songwriter, who was a freelance artist for four years and has now signed with Republic Records, credits RuPaul Charles with being an inspiration to her as she grew up, describing them as a “ray. of light and hope for so many members of the LGBTQ community ”.

Other artists attending the EMA ceremony will include Eurovision 2021 laureates Maneskin and Colombian singer Maluma.

– The MTV EMA 2021 will air on MTV UK on Sunday November 14 at 9 p.m. GMT.
